CUFA (Central Union of Favelas) is a Brazilian organization recognized both nationally and internationally in the fields of social assistance, sports and recreation and community development which has existed for nearly 20 years. It was initially created through the unification of young people from favelas, mostly black youth, who sought means of expression.\nCUFA promotes activities in the fields of education, recreation, sports, culture and citizenship, such as graffiti, DJ workshops, break, rap, audiovisual media, street basketball, and literature, among other social projects, courses and classes. CUFA also promotes, produces, distributes and transmits hip hop culture through publications, records, videos, radio programs, shows, contests, musical festivals, cinema, art workshops, exhibits, debates, and conferences. These activities are all mediums used by CUFA as instruments to promote integration, development and social inclusion. In this way, through its particular approach, CUFA intends to expand its reach and means of communication and expression, disseminating awareness and opportunities among underprivileged segments of the population through professional qualification workshops and a series of other activities which raise the self esteem of marginalized youth by opening opportunities for knowledge and new perspectives. \n\nActing as a cultural production and sports recreation hub since 1999, through partnerships, endorsements and other forms of support, CUFA educates and informs citizens of Rio de Janeiro as well as the other 26 Brazilian states and the Federal District, and is present as well in countries such as Bolivia, Germany, Chile, Hungary, Italy and the United States. The CUFA team is mostly integrated by young people who were trained through professionalization workshops promoted by the organization and are themselves mostly residents of underprivileged communities.
