Support those affected by hurricanes!

On Saturday April 16th, 2016, Ecuador and Japan were hit with powerful earthquakes and multiple aftershocks. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck northern Ecuador on Saturday April 16th resulting in at least 272 people killed and 2,527 people injured, according to the government of Ecuador. A magnitude 6.2 quake struck Japan on Thursday April 14th, followed by a magnitude 7.3 quake on Saturday April 16th. More than 40 people have been confirmed dead and 1,100 injured in Japan. Through the Ecuador and Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, we show our solidarity and support for the communities affected in both Japan and Ecuador.

Hurricane Eta, the 28th storm this season, made landfall in Nicaragua on Tuesday afternoon. As a category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, the storm has already ravaged Honduras, Nicaragua, and surrounding regions. The storm will continue to hover over Central America through the weekend, bringing along life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides. Reports of Eta's catastrophic damage from rains, winds and flooding in Nicaragua and Honduras have begun to roll in, but it could be days until residents there are able to survey the totality of the impact. It is estimated that 1.2 million people have been affected by the storm, which could move to the Caribbean and southern Florida in the days to come. On June 22nd, 2022 a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan. That afternoon, the toll had already reached at least 1,000 casualties and more than 1,500 more injured. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time. It was felt across most of the country, and because it took place near the border of Pakistan, the country was also affected. We don't yet know the full magnitude of the disaster, but these organizations are sharing their work and receiving donations so that you can help those affected.

The Rohingya population, a mostly Muslim ethnic minority from Myanmar's Rakhine state, have been systematically persecuted and attacked. Since August, over 615,000 Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh. In response to this humanitarian crisis, we established the Rohingya Refugee Relief Fund to support nonprofit organizations providing critical emergency aid like shelter materials, clean water, health clinics, and support for survivors of gender-based violence.

The eastern Indonesian island of Sulawesi was hit with a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami that hurled water as high as 20 feet over the city of Palu. Officials said the death toll has reached 2113 and there's still more than 1300 people missing. Since the disasters, stores have been looted, residents have gone hungry and there have been mass jail breaks. Some nonprofit organizations and charities have mobilized to bring relief to the island. If you want to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami, here is some guidance, and a list of some of the organizations involved in recovery efforts, as per the New York Times.

Hurricane Willa battered the coast of Mexico, flooding homes and leaving many without power and access to safe water. Willa is just the fourth Eastern Pacific hurricane to reach Category 5 strength in the month of October dating to 1971. The others were Patricia (2015), Rick (2009) and Kenna (2002). The 2021 Brazil COVID-19 Recovery Fund is composed of pre-vetted nonprofits based in the United States providing emergency response in Brazil. Through a single donation to the Fund, you can support multiple organizations' initiatives to provide short-term and long-term response and recovery. Our Fund approach is informed by expert and local recommendations based on up to date information from disaster philanthropy and nongovernmental organization networks, such as the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. Given the ever-changing nature of this pandemic and widespread impact, the composition of the nonprofits in this Fund will evolve. Helping fight the humanitarian crisis in India. India, which hosts 1/6th of the global population, has seen a record number of daily cases and lives lost to Covid-19. It has been reporting 400k new cases every day with more than 3,500 deaths per day in this second wave, figures that are likely being under reported. With 2.4M+ active cases and 180K+ deaths reported as of late April, the COVID resurgence in India has stretched existing medical infrastructure to the breaking point with a shortage of health workers and hospital running out of beds, oxygen supplies, ventilators and anti-viral drugs. The employees of Rabobank and community can donate to the disaster response campaign to benefit responding nonprofits: UNICEF, CARE, Direct Relief, American India Foundation and Path. Rabobank will match eligible donations up to $500 per employee. Please note: donations will be counted toward employees' annual $500 match limit.

Many charities do great work, but it's not always clear which you should donate to. Which will do the most good? The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was one for the record books before it even officially started. The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) forecasted as many as 25 named storms and six major hurricanes, more than double the 1981-2010 historical averages. So far, there have been 30 named storms including 13 hurricanes, most recently Eta and Iota which devastated parts of Central America. In addition, wildfires continue to ravage through California, Oregon and Washington State leveling homes and displacing thousands. Support the efforts of our national and international disaster relief partners, so they may actively prepare and respond to all regions affected by natural disasters this year. All gifts to this fund will be matched at 50% per our Giving That Matters employee giving guidelines. One gift to the 2020 Disaster Relief Fund will be split equally among all the organizations in the fund.

Torrential monsoon rains and floods have washed away villages and infrastructure across three of the four provinces of Pakistan (Sindh, Baluchistan, and Punjab). As a result, around 33 million people, including 16 million children, have been affected, with more than 1,100 people dead. Some 200,000 homes have been swept away and a further 450,000 damaged; nearly 18,000 schools have been damaged as well. Government officials are calling it a “climate catastrophe” and say the country is “ground zero” for extreme weather events. In the past year, Pakistan's also experienced heat waves, forest fires, and glacial lake outbursts. Pakistan produces less than 1% of global GHG emissions, yet it is listed as one of the most climate vulnerable places in the world. We've created the fund to support organizations and their emergency response efforts delivering life saving supplies, such as food, water, medicines and shelter.

Thousands of people are dead and many more are injured after a massive earthquake rocked Turkey and Syria Monday morning. The magnitude 7.8 quake was one of the strongest to strike the area in more than a century. Amid severe aftershocks, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) has called for international help. Many other organizations are also on the ground responding. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and many more injured after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey on Monday, just 50 miles from the Syrian border. Since the earthquake there have been hundreds of aftershocks. The strongest was 7.5 magnitude, adding to the devastation. Many of the hardest-hit communities are in northwestern Syria, where people who have already been displaced several times by the ongoing conflict are among those whose homes were destroyed in the quakes. They are without adequate shelter, food and basic necessities as temperatures plunge well below freezing.
